Gary started out as a guitarist playing the Stornoway circuit in the late 1980’s .He left Lewis in 1990 to pursue a career as a professional musician and was accepted to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow where he graduated with a distinction in classical guitar in 1995. During his time at the RSAMD Gary studied with some of the worlds greatest guitarists such as David Russell, Carlos Bonnell, Paul Gregory and Stephano Grondona and in 1997 he was awarded a scholarship from the Bath International Guitar Festival to attend master classes with Manuel Barrueco and Jose Thomas.

From 1995 Gary has worked as a peripatetic guitar teacher and concert guitarist and has given recitals throughout the UK.

Among his many concerts are appearances at the Bath International Guitar Festival, the Wigmore Hall London, the Dundee International Guitar Festival, the Queens Hall and Usher Hall Edinburgh and Perth City Hall as soloist with the Perth City Orchestra. He has also appeared on BBC TV and Radio and Grampian TV.

Gary has also been a long serving member of the Yehudi Menuin “Live Music Now” scheme for promoting talented young musicians and has been invited back as a member of the panel.

Gary has also recorded six Cds under his own label “Elliot Studios” recording most of the major works written for classical guitar.
